Our Lady of Sorrows, depicted as “Mater Dolorosa” (Mother of Sorrows) has been the subject of some key works of Roman Catholic Marian art. In other representations the Virgin Mary is depicted with seven swords in her heart, a reference to the prophecy of Simeon at the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, the day after the feast of the Holy Cross to show the close connection between Jesus’ Passion and Mary’s Sorrows. This advocation has its roots in the Gospel.<\/div>
Each month of the liturgical year is devoted to a particular Catholic tradition, usually centered on a Feast during that month. As August is the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, September follows as the Month of Our Lady of Sorrows.<\/div>

    St. Sebastian<\/strong> was a Roman soldier and early Christian martyr (d. c. 288 AD), renowned for his secret support of persecuted Christians during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. A captain of the Praetorian Guard, he maintained his Christian faith in secret until it was discovered, leading to his condemnation.<\/p>

    According to tradition, Sebastian was tied to a post and shot with arrows, surviving this initial execution attempt through what was regarded as a miraculous recovery. After confronting Emperor Diocletian again for his persecution of Christians, he was executed a second time this time by clubbing securing his place among the most revered early martyrs.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    St. Thomas<\/strong>, most commonly known as Saint Thomas the Apostle<\/strong>, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. Often referred to as \u201cDoubting Thomas\u201d<\/em> for initially questioning the Resurrection, he ultimately made one of the strongest professions of faith in the New Testament, declaring Jesus as \u201cMy Lord and my God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

    He holds a particularly significant place in Christian tradition in India. According to long\u2013standing belief, St. Thomas traveled to India as a missionary, preaching the Gospel and establishing Christian communities. He is especially venerated by the Saint Thomas Christians (Syro-Malabar)<\/strong>. Tradition states that he was martyred in Chennai (Mylapore)<\/strong> around 72 AD, where major shrines\u2014most notably the San Thome Basilica<\/strong>\u2014mark his burial site.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Saint George<\/strong> is venerated as an early Christian martyr and one of the most celebrated saints in the world. Revered for his courage and steadfast faith, he is honored as the patron saint of England, Georgia<\/strong>, and several other countries and regions. Though historical details about his life are limited, tradition states that he was born in Cappadocia<\/strong> around 275 AD and served as a soldier in the Roman army.<\/p>

    During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian<\/strong>, George refused to renounce his faith and was martyred around 303 AD<\/strong>. Over the centuries, he became closely associated with the legendary tale of Saint George and the Dragon<\/strong>, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and faith over fear.<\/p>

    His legacy continues to inspire devotion across cultures, and his feast day on April 23rd<\/strong> is celebrated widely most notably as a national day of significance in England.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Mar Joseph Pamplany was born on 3 December 1969 in Charal, Kannur district, Kerala, as the fifth of seven children of Thomas and Mary Pamplany. He completed his schooling in Charal and Kilianthara before joining the Minor Seminary of Tellicherry in 1988. He later pursued philosophy and theology at St. Joseph\u2019s Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye, and was ordained a priest on 30 December 1997. After serving as assistant vicar at Peravoor and vicar at Deepagiri Parish, he went to Belgium in 2001, where he obtained a Licentiate and a Doctorate in Biblical Theology from KU Leuven.
